Cognetics
Cognetics is the proposed study of cognitive formation.
Its subject is not intelligence considered at a single moment. It is the process through which an intelligence becomes organised across time.
The field asks how prior events come to influence later attention, memory, reasoning and judgement. It is concerned with what is acquired, how it is arranged, what persists, what changes and which parts of the resulting structure are allowed to govern future cognition.
Its formal definition is:
Cognitive formation is the process through which an intelligence acquires, organises, preserves, revises and governs the structures that shape future cognition.
Formation
What changes when intelligence changes?
Sometimes the answer is obvious. A person learns a skill. An organisation adopts a procedure. A machine gains a capability.
Other changes are less visible.
An intelligence may begin to notice evidence it once ignored. It may stop trusting a source that previously carried authority. It may recognise that a successful action succeeded for the wrong reason. It may preserve a fact but revise the assumptions surrounding it.
These changes alter the conditions under which later thought occurs.
Cognetics treats that reorganisation as its central object.
The five processes
Acquisition
Every intelligence receives structures from somewhere.
They may be inherited, taught, trained, inferred, copied or formed through direct experience. Acquisition introduces something capable of shaping later cognition.
What enters the system, however, does not determine how it will be used.
Organisation
Cognition is not an undifferentiated store.
Some knowledge is immediately accessible. Some remains peripheral. Certain memories become examples, while others become rules. Some sources acquire authority and others lose it.
Organisation concerns the relationships that give cognitive material its place and influence.
Preservation
Development requires continuity.
A lesson that vanishes before it can guide another decision has little formative value. Yet perfect retention would be equally harmful. Obsolete conclusions, exceptional cases and mistaken interpretations must sometimes be allowed to weaken or disappear.
The problem is not simply how to remember. It is how to preserve the right things with the right weight.
Revision
Revision occurs when evidence, consequence or reflection changes the structures shaping future cognition.
The smallest revision changes an answer.
A deeper one changes an expectation, a distinction or a governing assumption.
Cognetics is especially concerned with the latter.
Governance
Not every part of an intelligence should be equally easy to change.
Some conclusions are tentative. Others protect identity, safety or institutional purpose. Some changes can occur automatically. Others require deliberation, evidence or permission.
Governance concerns the distribution of authority over formation: what may change, what may cause that change and what constraints should apply.
Formation and performance
Better results do not always mean better judgement.
An intelligence can produce a stronger result without becoming better organised.
It may rely on a more powerful component. It may repeat a stored answer. It may optimise for a visible measure while weakening qualities the measure does not capture.
The reverse can also occur. A well-judged decision may produce a poor outcome because the world remained uncertain.
Cognetics therefore distinguishes performance from the structures that produced it.
Outcomes matter, but they must be interpreted.
History
A history is more than a record.
A database can contain every event that has occurred without any of those events changing future conduct.
For history to become formative, earlier events must acquire present influence.
A remembered failure may alter what receives attention. A corrected assumption may change how evidence is interpreted. A pattern of consequences may affect which action now appears prudent.
The subject is not storage alone. It is the conversion of history into organised influence.
Judgement
Judgement begins where the answer is not fully specified.
Knowledge concerns what is available.
Reasoning concerns what follows from a given frame.
Judgement concerns the choice of frame, the weight given to evidence and the action taken when uncertainty remains.
It is therefore strongly dependent on formation.
Two intelligences can possess the same information and reach different conclusions because experience has taught them to notice different risks, trust different sources or interpret the same evidence differently.
Cognetics studies how those dispositions are formed and revised.
Related fields
Cognetics begins within an existing landscape.
The proposed field does not claim to have discovered learning, memory, development or adaptation.
Cognitive science already investigates the mechanisms and organisation of cognition. Developmental psychology studies the formation of human capacities. Expertise research examines how prolonged practice changes perception and judgement. Organisational learning studies how collective knowledge and routines change. Continual learning addresses retention, forgetting and transfer under sequential change. Cybernetics established foundational accounts of feedback and control. Alignment research already deals with the governed formation of artificial behaviour through feedback, preferences and principles.
Cognetics depends on this work.
Its narrower claim is that these fields may contain parts of a common longitudinal object: the organised process through which past events come to govern future cognition.
That claim must be demonstrated rather than assumed.
Across substrates
Comparison without equivalence.
Biological, institutional and artificial intelligences do not develop through the same mechanisms.
A human life cannot be reduced to a training process. An institution is not simply a large mind. An artificial system does not acquire moral status merely because developmental language can be applied to it.
Cognetics preserves these distinctions.
Cross-substrate comparison is justified only where a concept remains useful after differences in mechanism, embodiment, authority and consequence have been made explicit.
When the comparison fails, that failure is itself informative.
The empirical standard
What would make Cognetics necessary?
The programme succeeds only if cognitive formation proves to be a useful scientific object.
That would require more than persuasive language. It would require:
- phenomena that cannot be explained adequately by examining isolated capabilities;
- measurements that can be applied beyond a single implementation;
- regularities that survive differences between cases;
- and explanations that improve prediction, intervention or design.
Two broad outcomes would defeat the disciplinary proposal.
The first is reduction. Cognitive formation may prove to be nothing more than an umbrella term for objects already explained more precisely elsewhere.
The second is sterility. The object may remain conceptually attractive while producing no useful measurements, explanations or predictions.
Either result should narrow the programme.
Cognetics is not entitled to permanence.
